RESIDENTIAL SHIPPING TIPS:

Pallet shipping, sometimes referred to as “skid shipping,” is a form of freight packaging with the main goal of keeping a shipment secured. Pallets are flat surfaces and act as a foundation for freight to rest on. They are loaded and unloaded using a forklift and are a highly economical way of transporting goods from one place to another. Before you ship your freight, it’s important to be aware of a few common mistakes to avoid like:

  • Choosing the wrong pallet for your freight
  • Top-heavy stacking of palletized items
  • Improper shrink wrapping
  • Not strapping the pallet correctly
  • Loose banding

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

Those who manage logistics in the chemical industry must constantly stay up to date with ever-changing federal, state and international regulations. Truck drivers, freight forwarders and others involved in the shipment of chemicals must be specially trained to handle cargo that can combust, contaminate or spoil other shipments instantly.

Many in the chemical industry choose to outsource their shipment needs to chemical transportation companies in an effort to save time and money. Logistics providers and freight forwarders can help companies effectively and efficiently navigate the myriad of regulations and find the qualified and reliable carriers to manage their cargo. Outsourcing can save chemical companies a great deal of time and money that it comes to continuously recruiting, educating, training and retaining employees that can properly manage the shipping of your chemicals. Whether you require the domestic or international delivery of chemicals by air, land, or sea, ProShip Logistics has the expertise and resources to manage your transportation project.

ProShip Logistics can arrange your hazardous material shipments at very cost-effective rates. We work with dozens of carriers who are certified to transport hazardous materials and we will find the best carrier rate for each specific shipment. In order to arrange a shipment of hazardous materials, it will be necessary to provide us with the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the product being shipped.

GUARANTEED DELIVERY

One of the golden rules of LTL transit is that the transit time of a standard LTL shipment is always measured in “estimated” days. This means that if a shipment is a day (or even week) late, the customer will still be responsible for the charges, regardless of the tardiness of the delivery. Though delayed freight can be frustrating, this is an industry-wide standard that applies to all LTL carriers. But what if you have something that absolutely must be delivered by a certain date? You can pay for this service, “guaranteeing” that this freight is delivered on time. If the freight does is not delivered by the agreed time, the carrier will not charge for the shipment.

When guaranteeing a shipment, we will always verify with the carrier that the service can be offered for your particular shipment before giving you a confirmation. A standard guarantee applies to delivery before 5pm, however some carriers offer a 12pm delivery guarantee for an additional cost. Keep in mind that a guarantee service only applies to standard LTL shipments. This excludes volume shipments, residential shipments, or any shipment that requires an appointment for delivery.

INSIDE PICKUP / DELIVERY

Inside delivery is a convenient service that many shippers offer. If a loading dock is not available at your delivery site, for an additional fee, you can request inside delivery on most freight shipments. This means, the driver will carry your shipment through the threshold of the delivery location.

However, before selecting inside delivery as a shipping option, it’s important to know what this service does and does not entail when shipping to residences and businesses.

Inside delivery to residences

When freight is delivered to a residential address, inside delivery involves the carrier moving the pallet to the driveway, porch or garage. Drivers will not take freight inside a home.

Most carriers have policies prohibiting drivers from even attempting in-home pickup or delivery. This policy is to avoid complaints that the driver tracked in mud, damaged walls or doors and the like. Additionally, there are potential liability issues if an accident or injury occurs inside.

Therefore, it’s in every party’s best interest that the freight simply is delivered to a convenient outdoor location. Planning for this is imperative when your freight is delivered to a residence.

Inside delivery to businesses

If delivering to a business, inside delivery generally means the shipment will be left inside the door of the business. Typically, the carrier will bring the freight a few feet inside the main entrance. If the freight needs to be delivered to the interior of the building, up any steps or up an elevator, the delivery charge will increase.

Also, most drivers will not breakdown freight to move it through doors. If your freight is larger than the entryway, a driver will not bring it inside. Drivers will also not perform “extraordinary” functions, like attempting to deliver in any area that is unsafe for their normal equipment.

LIFT GATE EQUIPPED TRUCKS

Need to ship a pallet but don’t have a dock or a forklift available? No problem! We can quote your shipment using a lift-gate equipped truck. The carrier’s driver will assist with loading/unloading to and from the lift-gate using a pallet jack.

For shipments exceeding 100 pounds or 72 inches in height, or the pickup and/or drop-off  locations don’t have accessible docks, then your shipment may require a truck with a lift-gate.

If a lift-gate or pallet jack is needed, make sure this is known before the carrier arrives so they can be prepared to handle your load without delay.

Limited Access Pickup / Delivery

We can handle the picking up and/or dropping off of your shipment from limited access facilities and self storage centers. We can also set up the carrier to call prior to pickup or delivery, for your convenience.

What is a limited access location?

A limited access location is an area where pickup or delivery is restricted or limited.

A helpful way to describe what a carrier will consider a Limited Access or Non-Commercial location is to consider the location from the driver’s perspective.

For example, if the driver has to go out of their normal route area, cannot pull up to a loading dock and load or unload within 10-15 minutes, the location will be considered either Limited Access or Non-Commercial and additional fees will apply.

This typically means gated areas a driver must check into, commercial establishments not open to the walk-in public, or destinations where an employee is not available to assist with loading or unloading.

Below is a list of specific destinations considered Limited Access. Since some locations are at the discretion of the carrier, this is not an all-inclusive list, but instead includes the most common places where additional charges will apply:

  • Camps
  • Carnivals
  • Churches
  • Colleges
  • Construction Sites
  • Fairs
  • Storage Units
  • Military Bases
  • Mine Sites
  • Mosques
  • Prisons
  • Schools
  • Synagogues
  • Temples
  • Universities
